The Peace of Mind Checklist

15 Questions to Ask Before Hiring a Private Caregiver

Protect your loved one and yourself with these essential screening questions.
Hiring a private caregiver is a big decision. This checklist helps you get past the surface and uncover who’s truly trustworthy, qualified, and ready to meet your family's unique needs.

Background & Experience

  1. Can you tell me about your caregiving experience especially with someone like my loved one?

  2. Do you have formal training or certifications (e.g., CNA, CPR, dementia care)?

  3. Have you worked independently in private homes before? If so, how did those arrangements work?

  4. Can you provide references from families you've worked with recently?

  5. Are you legally authorized to work and do you carry any professional insurance?

Care Philosophy & Compatibility

  1. How do you approach care when a client is resistant or having a hard day?

  2. What do you believe makes a great day for the person you’re caring for?

  3. How do you maintain dignity and independence while providing assistance?

  4. What types of tasks are you comfortable with and are there any you won’t do?

  5. Are you comfortable working in a household with pets, cameras, or other staff?

Reliability & Safety

  1. What is your availability, and are you open to a trial period or fill-in shifts at first?

  2. How do you handle emergencies, and have you ever had to respond to one before?

  3. Do you have reliable transportation and a backup plan if you can’t make a shift?

  4. Are you willing to undergo a background check and drug screening?

  5. Do you have a written agreement or expectations document for your clients?

Bonus Tip:

Trust your instincts. If something feels off or too vague, don’t ignore it. A truly qualified and trustworthy caregiver will be happy to answer your questions clearly and thoroughly.
